Losing the Sense of Smell is Common—And Potentially Dangerous

Abstract

Just as blindness or deafness can imperil you, so can loss of another of the five senses: smell. Many Americans over age 55 have an impaired sense of smell, making them more vulnerable to undetected fires and gas leaks, cooking accidents, eating spoiled foods, and breathing toxic substances.
