Is Splenda Sugar-Coating the Facts?

Abstract

The debate over the wildly popular sugar substitute Splenda has turned not-so-sweet. The maker of Equal, its closest competitor, has sued over Splenda’s claim, “Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar,” saying it fools consumers into thinking the product is all-natural. The Sugar Association has launched a Web site, truthaboutsplenda.com, that snipes, “Splenda is an artificial sweetener made from a chemical compound that includes chlorine. Splenda is not natural.” Now McNeil Nutritionals, which makes Splenda, is suing the sugar organization for making “false and misleading claims.” What’s a health-conscious person with a sweet tooth to do—or believe?
