Antibacterial Soaps Don’t Beat Plain Soap—But May Risk “Superbugs”

Abstract

It’s cold and flu season, so it’s time to break out the antibacterial soap—right? Not so fast, says a group of scientists who testified before the US Food and Drug Administration’s Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee. Nothing beats plain old soap and water, according to the scientists, and overuse of antibacterial agents risks developing resistant “superbugs.”
