FDA Allows Watered-Down Tomato Claims vs. Cancer, Nixes Lycopene Claim

Abstract

Tomatoes have plenty of nutritional benefits, but can eating tomatoes also fight cancer? Sort of. Maybe. It depends. That’s how you might interpret the recent ruling by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after two years of investigation, granting a “qualified health claim” for fresh, dried and canned tomatoes regarding four types of cancers. Even though the FDA allowed marketers to use some extremely watered-down language in their packaging, technically the ruling was a “partial denial.” The tomato claims okayed by the FDA are so cautious, in fact, that companies such as H.J. Heinz probably won’t put them on its products, though the claims will be used in customer communications.
