Calcium, Vitamin D and Bone Health: Now What Should You Do?

Abstract

The ink was hardly dry on the controversial news about low-fat diets from the Women’s Health Initiative (see last month’s Healthletter) when a second arm of the study reported more results that seemed to contradict conventional medical wisdom: In a seven-year trial of 36,282 postmenopausal women, researchers found no significant benefit from calcium and vitamin D supplementation in preventing hip fractures.
