Panel Issues Wake-Up Call on Sleeplessness in America

Abstract

Americans have accepted an unhealthy level of sleep deprivation as a way of life, opening themselves to a host of costly accidents and illness. That’s the conclusion of a special panel of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in their report on “Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation: An Unmet Public Health Problem.” The report says otherwise health-conscious Americans consider sleep an “expendable luxury.” The panel urges the government to undertake measures to correct this misperception in the public consciousness, and for more medical professionals to get training in this specialty.
